November 3, 2026 · By Piyush Sahoo A missed call service is a business phone number that customers ring without anyone answering. The call ends unanswered, so the caller normally pays nothing. The system records who rang and when. The business then replies with an SMS, a WhatsApp message, or a callback.
Key takeaways
  • A missed call gives you a phone number and a time, and nothing else. Everything of value happens in the follow-up.
  • It suits places where nobody can tap a link, such as print ads, hoardings, radio, and product packs.
  • Use a separate number for each ad or option, because the number dialled becomes your tracking data.
  • In India, TRAI’s September 2026 rules limit contact based on an inquiry to seven days and require proof of that inquiry.
  • A missed call isn’t blanket permission to market to someone. Get registered consent before you promote anything.

What does “missed call” mean, exactly?

The same two words describe four different things, so it helps to separate them first. This article covers the third one. A missed call number is simply the phone number used for it.

How does a missed call service work?

Your customer does one thing: dial. The system handles the rest. Flow diagram. A customer sees a number, dials it, the service rejects the call unanswered, and the system logs the caller, time, and number dialled. The log triggers an SMS or WhatsApp reply, a callback from a person, or an automated call. The caller normally adds no call charge. The business pays for the number, capacity, and follow-ups. The log triggers an SMS or WhatsApp reply, a callback from a person, or an automated call. The caller normally adds no call charge. The business pays for the number, capacity, and follow-ups. What the caller hears depends on the setup. Some services cut the call after a ring or two, while others reject it at once with a busy tone. Either way, nobody picks up, so there’s no conversation to pay for. The business receives very little: the caller’s number and the time. It doesn’t get a name, a need, or a location it can rely on. That’s the bargain. You ask the customer for almost nothing, so you learn almost nothing until you follow up.

Why are missed calls still used in India?

The habit came first. People on small prepaid balances learned to signal each other with a ring that was cut before it connected. Businesses later built on a behaviour that nobody had to be taught. ZipDial, founded in 2010, turned that habit into missed call marketing. People rang a brand’s number, hung up before any charge, and got a call or text back. Twitter announced its purchase of the company in January 2015. Cheaper calls and bundled plans have weakened the cost argument since then. Two other reasons keep the idea alive. It connects offline ads to a phone. You can’t click a hoarding or a radio spot, but you can dial a number from one. It reaches people outside the broadband base. TRAI’s September 2026 subscriber data shows a large group of connections with no broadband subscription. Bar chart from TRAI data for the end of September 2026. India had 1,174.34 million wireless connections excluding machine SIMs, and 964.98 million were on broadband. That leaves 209.36 million, about 18 percent, not on broadband. Wireless tele-density was 147.47 in urban areas and 60.72 in rural areas. Bar chart from TRAI data for the end of September 2026. Wireless tele-density was 147.47 in urban areas and 60.72 in rural areas. We calculated that gap from TRAI’s table by adding consumer SIMs (1,155.15 million) and fixed wireless connections (19.19 million), then subtracting wireless broadband without machine SIMs (964.98 million). Read it as connections, not people, because one person can hold several SIMs.

What do businesses use missed calls for?

These uses share one pattern: a low-risk request where the caller’s number is enough to act on. The first row depends on a number the bank or fund already holds. That’s why those services can answer instantly: the caller’s number identifies the account. An ad response has no such record, so it needs a person or a clearer next step.

When is a missed call the wrong choice?

A missed call is a first step for a person who can’t easily take another kind of step. If they can, give them something richer. Decision map. If people can tap a link where they see you, use a web form when you need details now, or a WhatsApp chat link when you don't. If they can't tap a link and need an answer during the contact, use an answered call or IVR. Otherwise, use a missed call: one number for each option if there's a choice to record, or one number if there isn't. Decision map. What can you send after a missed call in India?

The rules changed in 2026. TRAI classifies what you send by its content and your relationship with the recipient. The map below is our plain-language reading of the rules. Decision map of TRAI categories. A follow-up that sells beyond the request is promotional: calls use the 140 series, SMS carries an opt-out, and blocks must be respected unless digital consent is held. For an existing customer, it is service or transactional on the 1600 series with no explicit consent, and confirmations go within 30 minutes. For someone mid-purchase, it needs registered explicit consent valid for seven days. For a product inquiry, contact is allowed for seven days at most if the inquiry is written or digital and verifiable. TRAI does not say whether a missed call qualifies. For a product inquiry, contact is allowed for seven days at most if the inquiry is written or digital and verifiable. TRAI does not say whether a missed call qualifies. The seven-day rule matters most. TRAI’s Third Amendment, notified on 18 September 2026, allows contact based on an inquiry only within seven days of it. The inquiry must be made in writing or through digital means, and you must keep it in a verifiable form. TRAI’s explanatory memorandum says it added that wording because senders were claiming oral inquiries that left no proof. Is a missed call a valid inquiry? The TRAI documents we read don’t say whether a missed call counts as an inquiry, so we can’t tell you it qualifies. TRAI’s press release says the inquiry provision is intended primarily for e-commerce and e-service platforms. Don’t assume either way. Keep a timestamped log, state the purpose clearly in your ad, and ask a telecom compliance adviser before you depend on this route. A missed call isn’t explicit consent by itself. TRAI defines explicit consent as permission recorded by a Consent Registrar, or verifiably obtained and then registered in the Consent Register. If you want to market after the first reply, get it through the consent process on DLT. The Vobiz DLT registration guide covers consent templates. Several other rules affect the follow-up: The Third Amendment’s parts start 30, 60, or 90 days after publication in the Gazette, and the A2P declaration falls in the 60-day group. Check the current position with your operator or adviser before launch.

How do you run a campaign without losing leads?

Most failures come from the follow-up plan, not the phone number. Work through these before you print anything.
  1. Promise one specific thing. “Ring for this week’s price list” gives people a reason to dial and gives you a clear purpose to record.
  2. Give each source its own number. The dialled number then tells you which ad, region, or store worked.
  3. Decide who replies, in what language, and how fast. A list that nobody works is worth nothing, so name an owner first.
  4. Check capacity before a big spot. Callers get a busy signal once you hit your concurrency ceiling, and that signal won’t show in your own logs. On a missed call number, the caller may think nothing is wrong. Raise your limit before a TV spot or a large print run.
  5. Publish the number on your own site. Australia’s regulator told people in 2019 to ignore missed calls from unexpected international numbers, and people may be wary of numbers they can’t place. A number customers can look up on your site gives them a reason to trust it.
  6. Tell people what to expect. Say who will contact them, and through which channel.
Then measure the steps that show real results:

How Vobiz handles a missed call flow

On Vobiz, a missed call flow is a small application built from documented parts, and a developer can put it together. Your team then chooses what happens after each call. Because To arrives with each call, one application can serve many campaign numbers and still tell them apart.
Numbers, SMS, and calls are billed, and follow-ups reach real people. Use your own credentials, check your consent records, and confirm the numbers before you send anything. See pricing for current rates.

FAQ

Normally, yes. An unanswered call doesn’t start call charges, which is why the idea works. Other routes can cost money, though. SBI, for example, notes that its keyword SMS requests carry charges, and that one short code is premium-rate. Check the terms if a campaign asks you to send a text.
It’s a phone number that a business publishes for customers to ring without expecting an answer. The system ends the call and records who rang. Many businesses use a separate number for each ad, store, or option, so the number dialled also shows where the response came from.
A missed call service is for businesses and collects responses from customers. A missed call alert is an operator feature for subscribers. It tells you who tried to reach you while your phone was off or out of coverage. The two only share a name.
It shouldn’t assume so. Promotional calls and SMS must respect your blocking preferences unless the sender holds your registered digital consent. TRAI’s rules also limit contact based on an inquiry to seven days. If you receive unwanted messages, you can complain through TRAI’s DND app or your operator.
It suits low-risk checks, such as confirming a cash-on-delivery order or showing a balance to a registered number. It proves less than it seems for anything involving money. SBI, for instance, says its SBI Quick service doesn’t provide financial transactional services. Use stronger authentication for payments and account changes.
No. A one-ring call from an unexpected overseas number may be a scam called wangiri, where calling back connects you to a premium-rate line. Ignore the call. Legitimate missed call campaigns work the other way round, because you ring a number that the business has published.
