November 3, 2026 · By Piyush Sahoo RCS messaging, short for Rich Communication Services, is the upgrade to SMS built into a phone’s own texting app. It adds a verified business name, images, tappable buttons and read status, and it needs Wi-Fi or mobile data. SMS is plain text that reaches nearly any phone. Many businesses use both.
Key takeaways
  • RCS gives your message a brand identity and buttons. SMS gives you the widest reach.
  • RCS works on iPhone from iOS 18, but only where the customer’s mobile provider supports it.
  • Plan for a mix: some customers will get RCS and others SMS, so check reachability before you send.
  • In India, your SMS backup still needs DLT registration, and its text has to match a registered template.
  • Support changes quickly, so confirm the current position for your operators before you commit a budget.

What does RCS mean in plain English?

Think of RCS as texting rebuilt for smartphones. Your customer doesn’t install an app. The message simply lands in the texting app they already use. The idea isn’t new. The GSMA, the mobile industry’s trade body, proposed RCS in 2007, and Google’s 2016 move into Android messaging gave it momentum. Apple’s support in iOS 18 widened the potential audience further. You’ll meet two versions of the same technology:
  • Person-to-person RCS is friends chatting, with typing indicators and better photos.
  • Business RCS, also called RCS for Business, RCS Business Messaging or RBM, is a company messaging its customers from a reviewed brand profile.
One detail often surprises teams. On Google’s platform, the business has to send the first message, and the customer can reply at any time after that. So RCS suits updates and offers that you start, more than a channel customers open on their own to find you.

RCS vs SMS: what changes for your business?

The biggest change is what the customer sees. Compare the same order update on each channel. Two phone mockups of one order update. The SMS shows a six-character sender ID and plain text with a link. The RCS shows a logo, a verified business name, a photo and three tappable buttons. Two phone mockups of one order update. The SMS shows a six-character sender ID and plain text with a link. The RCS shows a logo, a verified business name, a photo and three tappable buttons. The table below sets out the differences that affect a budget or a campaign plan. Vendors often quote big RCS gains over SMS. Treat these as vendor-reported prompts to run your own test, not as a forecast for your customers.

How do long and Hindi messages change the picture?

Language can change your SMS bill more than most teams expect. An SMS using only basic Latin characters fits 160 characters in one piece. Hindi and most other non-Latin scripts fit just 70, and one emoji or curly apostrophe triggers the same limit. Each piece, called a segment, is billed separately. RCS works differently. On Vobiz, an RCS send counts as a single segment and has its own rate. Google’s platform allows up to 3,072 characters of text. Bar chart of billable units for one message. At 160 characters, English SMS takes 1 segment, Hindi SMS 3, and RCS 1 send. At 300 characters, 2, 5 and 1. At 500 characters, 4, 8 and 1. Bar chart of billable units for one message. At 160 characters, English SMS takes 1 segment, Hindi SMS 3, and RCS 1 send. At 300 characters, 2, 5 and 1. At 500 characters, 4, 8 and 1. This is a count of units, not proof that RCS is cheaper, because the two rates differ. Here is an illustrative way to compare them, using an assumed 60% RCS reach:
  1. You have 10,000 customers and a 300-character Hindi order update.
  2. All SMS means 10,000 messages at 5 segments each, so 50,000 SMS segments.
  3. A mix means 6,000 RCS sends, plus 4,000 SMS at 5 segments each. That is 6,000 RCS sends and 20,000 SMS segments.
  4. Multiply each count by your own rates, then compare the two totals.
Replace the 60% with your real reachability result before you draw any conclusion.

Does RCS work on iPhone?

Yes, with conditions. Apple says you need iOS 18 or later and a data plan from a provider that supports RCS on iPhone. To check, open Settings, then Apps, Messages and RCS Messaging. If that option isn’t there, RCS may not be available in that region or with that provider. Four points matter if you’re messaging iPhone customers: RCS doesn’t replace iMessage. Apple still recommends iMessage between Apple devices. RCS is the bridge to everyone else. In India, iPhone coverage needs checking by operator. Apple’s India provider list, dated February 5, 2026 when we read it in November, showed RCS messaging for Reliance Jio but not for Airtel or Vi. Check the live page, because it changes.

When does a message arrive as RCS, and when as SMS?

Four conditions have to line up for each customer. Google’s platform reports a customer as unreachable if the phone lacks RCS, or if your sender isn’t launched on their network. That second cause catches teams out, because a customer can have working RCS and still be out of your reach. Flow diagram of four conditions: phone and app support, network support, a sender approved and launched on that network, and a data connection before expiry. If all are true the message arrives as RCS. If any fails it goes out as plain SMS when fallback is set up, and otherwise fails. Is RCS available in India, and what about DLT?

RCS is live for businesses in India, but the picture varies by operator and has moved fast. Timeline of six events: June 2022, Google stops promotional RCS in India. 2024, iOS 18 brings RCS to iPhone. March 2025, GSMA Universal Profile 3.0. March 2026, Airtel and Google announce RCS with Airtel spam checks. May 2026, iOS 26.5 encrypted RCS beta. September 2026, reports of Jio business RCS on iPhone. In 2022, Google stopped promotional RCS in India after businesses abused its anti-spam policies. Airtel also held back, and a spokesperson said it first wanted RCS traffic routed through its own spam filter. In March 2026, Airtel and Google announced RCS with real-time checks on business messages. Airtel lists sender identity checks, DND-based limits on promotional messages, spam blocking, malicious-domain filtering and throttling of flagged senders. Expect close scrutiny of promotional traffic. Check with your provider before you budget, because reports like these go out of date quickly. Jio’s reported rates also vary by message type, with marketing highest and one-time passwords lowest. So your mix of messages affects cost, as well as your volume.

What are the rules for commercial RCS in India?

Here is what’s clear, and what isn’t. Clear: SMS needs DLT. Indian operators pass commercial SMS only with valid DLT identifiers. A TRAI direction of November 18, 2025 also tells operators to check tagged links and callback numbers in SMS templates against a whitelist. After a 60-day grace period, messages that fail this check are rejected. Not clear: RCS itself. We searched TRAI’s Third Amendment to the commercial communications regulations, dated September 18, 2026, and it doesn’t name RCS. We also found no TRAI order on RCS elsewhere. Vendor guides disagree on whether SMS DLT rules extend to RCS. We couldn’t confirm either view from TRAI, so don’t read the silence as an exemption. Your provider and legal adviser should confirm what applies to your use case. The catch: your fallback text has to pass DLT. On Vobiz, SMS fallback sends the same text as the RCS message, and in India that text must match a registered template. So a long, conversational RCS message can be a poor fit for automatic fallback. You have two workable options:
  • Check reachability first, then send RCS to some customers and a separate, registered SMS with your DLT IDs to the rest.
  • Write the RCS text to match your DLT template, then confirm and test automatic fallback on your India route with your provider before you rely on it.

Should you use SMS, RCS or WhatsApp?

Decide message by message. If your customers already chat with you on WhatsApp, it belongs in the same decision. Decision map. If a message must arrive within seconds on any phone, use SMS first. If plain words and one link are enough, use SMS. If customers have opted in and chat on WhatsApp, use WhatsApp with SMS backup. If a reachability check shows enough RCS-capable customers, use RCS with SMS fallback. Otherwise use SMS with a link and check again later. Decision map. These are our recommendations. Before you switch a live message type to RCS, work through this list:
  1. Run a reachability check on a sample of real customers, split by operator.
  2. Get your sender approved early, because review time depends on the platform and operators in each market.
  3. Register DLT templates for any SMS backup you plan to use in India.
  4. Hold back a control group on SMS, then compare completed actions rather than opens.
  5. Honour opt-outs everywhere. Vobiz keeps them per number and channel, so also hold one consent record on your side that covers every channel.

How Vobiz handles RCS

Vobiz sends SMS, MMS and RCS through one Messaging API, using the same account credentials you use for voice. Your team can also work from the console under SMS & RCS. For costs, Cost preview prices a message before you send, and rates are on the pricing page. To check RCS availability for your operators and countries, talk to the Vobiz team.
Every RCS or SMS send reaches a real phone and is billed. Use your own credentials, send only to customers who have agreed to hear from you, and confirm your audience before launching a campaign.

Frequently asked questions

RCS is short for Rich Communication Services. It is the messaging standard meant to succeed SMS and MMS inside a phone’s built-in texting app. For businesses, it adds a verified name, images and tappable buttons, and customers don’t need to install anything new.
Yes, from iOS 18 onward, when the customer’s mobile provider supports RCS on iPhone. Customers can check under Settings, Apps, Messages, RCS Messaging. If that setting is missing, RCS may not be available with their provider or in their region. RCS chats appear in green bubbles.
No. iMessage is Apple’s own service, and Apple still recommends it between Apple devices. RCS is an industry standard provided through mobile operators, and it reaches Android phones too. On an iPhone, an RCS chat shows in the Messages app with green bubbles rather than blue.
Yes. RCS travels over Wi-Fi or mobile data, so a phone with no connection cannot receive it until it reconnects. SMS uses the mobile network itself and needs neither. That difference is why SMS usually stays as the backup for RCS.
Business messages on Google’s platform are encrypted between the business and Google, and between Google and the phone. Google can scan them for malicious content, so they are not end-to-end encrypted. Person-to-person RCS between iPhone and Android gained end-to-end encryption as a beta in iOS 26.5.
SMS does, and that includes any SMS fallback from an RCS campaign. We found no TRAI text naming RCS, including the September 2026 amendment, so don’t treat that silence as an exemption. Ask your provider what your RCS use case requires, and take legal advice.
