It is the phone feature that sends pictures, short videos, audio and longer text to a mobile number, with no app needed. SMS carries only short text. In India, chat apps such as WhatsApp now do much of this job, while MMS remains a standard business channel in the US and Canada. This guide explains the meaning in plain language, shows what happens when you press send, and helps you choose the right channel for your customers. MMS stands for **Multimedia Messaging Service**. In Hindi, you will usually see it written as मल्टीमीडिया मैसेजिंग सर्विस. Some phones and carriers call the same thing a [picture message or multimedia message](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multimedia_Messaging_Service). The letters can mean something else outside telecom, so check the context: | Where you saw it | What MMS means | What it is | | - | - | - | | A phone, a chat or a telecom bill | Multimedia Messaging Service | A message with media, sent to a phone number | | A college or admissions page in India | [Master of Management Studies](https://www.vedantu.com/full-form/mms-full-form) | A management degree taken after graduation | The rest of this guide covers the messaging meaning. ## What is an MMS video? An MMS video is a short clip sent as a multimedia message. The classic format allows [up to about forty seconds](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multimedia_Messaging_Service). Networks shrink the file to fit their limits, so the clip often looks soft or pixelated when it arrives. You may also meet the phrase in a headline or a forwarded message about a private clip. The label describes a delivery method and changes nothing legally. India's [Information Technology Act](https://www.indiacode.nic.in/bitstream/123456789/13116/1/it_act_2000_updated.pdf) makes it an offence to capture, publish or transmit an image of a person's private area without consent, under circumstances violating privacy, with up to three years in prison, a fine of up to two lakh rupees, or both (Section 66E). Section 67 separately punishes sending obscene material electronically. If a clip of you or someone you know is being shared, don't forward it. You can report it through the Home Ministry's [Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre channels](https://i4c.mha.gov.in/): the cybercrime.gov.in portal or the 1930 helpline. For your specific case, speak to a lawyer or the police. ## How does an MMS reach the other phone? A text message arrives whole. An MMS arrives in stages, and each stage can fail on its own. Check how your message looks on real phones. * **Delivery can lag behind sending.** The message isn't complete until the phone has fetched the file. A phone with mobile data off can get stuck at the alert stage. * **Phone settings matter.** Google's help page tells users to [check the data connection and reset APN settings](https://support.google.com/messages/answer/9077245?hl=en\&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid) when MMS fails. An SMS doesn't depend on those settings in the same way. ## How much can one MMS carry? Less than most people expect. The standard itself [sets no maximum size](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multimedia_Messaging_Service), so operators and providers each choose their own ceiling. A safe habit is to keep total MMS size within those recommended sizes, and under 300 KB if you need to reach older phones. Compress images, and keep any video very short. ## SMS vs MMS vs RCS vs WhatsApp MMS sits between plain text and modern chat. MMS [can carry text longer than 160 characters](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multimedia_Messaging_Service), so long text can arrive as one message rather than in segments. Phones also switch a text to MMS on their own at times. Group chats [can use group MMS](https://support.apple.com/en-us/118236), and on older phones, [adding an emoji could trigger the switch](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multimedia_Messaging_Service). ## Is MMS still used, and does it work in India? Yes, but its position differs sharply by country. The US wireless industry body CTIA still [lists MMS alongside SMS and RCS](https://api.ctia.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/230523-CTIA-Messaging-Principles-and-Best-Practices-FINAL.pdf) in its May 2023 messaging guidelines. India moved away early, for reasons a marketing team should note: * **Consumers never fully adopted it.** TelecomTalk reported that MMS [cost more than SMS, lacked support on some handsets, and often reached people as a link](https://telecomtalk.info/bsnl-bids-goodbye-to-mms-says-it-has-become-obsolete/143399/). * **BSNL withdrew it.** Reports differ on the date. [Wikipedia gives 1 November 2015](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multimedia_Messaging_Service), while [Deccan Chronicle reported 14 February 2016](https://www.deccanchronicle.com/technology/in-other-news/120216/telecom-companies-to-terminate-mms-service.html). * **Chat apps took over.** TechCrunch put WhatsApp at [more than 500 million users in India](https://techcrunch.com/2024/12/31/india-lifts-whatsapp-payment-curbs/) at the end of 2024. * **RCS is the newer path.** Voice\&Data reported in December 2025 that [Airtel had partnered with Google, bringing all three private operators on board](https://www.voicendata.com/mobile-services/rcs-gains-momentum-in-india-with-airtelgoogle-partnership-10893020). Jio's messaging help page tells customers to use the Jio Chat app for multimedia messages. We found no current public MMS page from Airtel or Vi. Treat MMS support in India as something to test on real numbers, rather than something to assume. ## What do businesses use MMS for? Businesses reach for MMS when a picture does the work faster than words. Common examples include coupons with embedded QR codes and customers sending barcode images back. Apple warns that SMS and MMS are [not protected from third parties while in transit](https://support.apple.com/en-us/104972), so regulated documents belong behind a login. ## Which channel should you choose? Start with whether the message truly needs media, then ask where the recipient lives. A short text with a link is often enough. ![Decision map. If no media is needed, use SMS. If media is needed and the recipient is in the US or Canada, use MMS, testing RCS first where phones support it. In India, use WhatsApp if the contact agreed, otherwise SMS with a DLT template and a whitelisted link. Elsewhere, check the operator, because several have switched MMS off. Send the same offer through your two best-fitting channels to people who agreed to hear from you. Compare delivered messages and completed actions, not only opens. We'd rather you use your own results than an industry average, because the audience and the operator mix decide the outcome. ## What rules apply to business MMS? Rules follow the recipient's country, so check them before your first campaign. This section is a starting point and not legal advice. **In India:** * **MMS counts as SMS.** TRAI's consolidated regulations say [SMS includes a multimedia message sent through MMS](https://www.trai.gov.in/sites/default/files/2026-05/CA_21052026.pdf). The consolidated text carries a disclaimer that the gazetted versions prevail. * **Promotional content has conditions.** The same text requires an opt-out mechanism within a promotional message. It also treats a service message mixed with promotion as promotional. * **Registration comes first.** Indian operators check commercial SMS against the [entity, header and template you register on a DLT portal](https://www.vobiz.ai/docs/sms/compliance/india-dlt.md), their shared sender registry. * **Links need approval.** TRAI directed operators to [block messages with URLs, APKs or OTT links that aren't whitelisted](https://www.pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2058943\®=48\&lang=2), and a later release confirms this [took effect on 1 October 2024](https://www.pib.gov.in/PressReleseDetailm.aspx?PRID=2068980\®=48\&lang=2). **In the US and Canada:** * **US registration applies.** US local numbers need a [10DLC campaign](https://www.vobiz.ai/docs/sms/compliance/us-10dlc-campaigns.md), and US toll-free numbers need [toll-free verification](https://www.vobiz.ai/docs/sms/compliance/us-toll-free.md) before production traffic. * **Consent and opt-out still count.** [CTIA's guidelines](https://api.ctia.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/230523-CTIA-Messaging-Principles-and-Best-Practices-FINAL.pdf) cover MMS, and an SMS opt-out on [Vobiz](https://www.vobiz.ai/docs/sms/opt-outs.md) also blocks MMS to that number. ## Why is my MMS not sending? Work through these checks in order. They cover the common causes on personal phones. 1. **Turn on mobile data.** [Google lists a data connection first](https://support.google.com/messages/answer/9077245?hl=en\&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid), so check that mobile data is on. 2. **Reset APN settings to default.** These settings connect your phone to the operator's data network, and they sit in your phone's settings app. 3. **Check your plan.** Apple says [your text plan must include SMS and MMS](https://support.apple.com/en-us/104972), so ask your operator whether yours does. 4. **Check that your operator still offers MMS.** As the BSNL example shows, some have withdrawn it. 5. **Make the file smaller.** Compress the image, or send a link instead. ## How Vobiz handles MMS and rich media Vobiz offers [one Messaging API for SMS, MMS and RCS](https://www.vobiz.ai/docs/sms/overview.md), with [WhatsApp Business messaging](https://www.vobiz.ai/docs/whatsapp/api.md) for chat-based media.
